We've released some new tasks to help us write the comparison page for Zulip's features against other chat products on the market.
Also, in case you folks are curious, GCI students have now completed a total of more than 170 Zulip tasks! This is incredible.
We're working to release a lot more, since a lot of our tasks have been claimed at this point :)
@Tim Abbott how are you supposed to submit spreadsheets?
Submit a link to a public Google spreadsheet
Ah, thanks!
We're also now releasing a few dozen "solve an open GitHub issue" tasks for the main server project! I recommend these tasks to folks who already have done our beginner tasks :).
yay, there are really no new coding tasks anymore
yeah, we're working on getting several more categories of coding tasks out the door :)
Does anybody know what "Put the spreadsheet and screenshots into a new directory gci/user-doc" means?
Reference link. @Kevin Riggle @Tomasz Kolek
...wait, why are we using the old version of that task, not the one I cleaned up?
I don't know? It's on the GCI page...
https://codein.withgoogle.com/dashboard/task-instances/4906420384301056/
Yeah, that wasn't a question for you so much as for Tim/the other mentors/the gods...
oh lol, my bad
Hold off on tackling that task for a bit while I see what's up.
no worries :)
@Kevin Riggle okay, I've already finished compiling all the spreadsheets and everything. I just need to submit, so just mention me when you find out what's wrong.
Will do
Actually, do you mind just looking over my spreadsheet right now? or are you too busy?
Too busy, I'm sorry :/
Ok. That's cool!
Which subtask did you do?
Slack A – aka the one with all "Yes"
xD
Hahaha
@Kevin Riggle I'm off. Just mention me when you get the stuff sorted out. It's late and need to catch up on sleep. Hopefully you will have a good night's rest (or good day's rest)! Thanks for all the help :)
@Joshua Pan Will do :) You're welcome!
@Joshua Pan Found the issue (or at least my revised version). Dunno why those tasks are linking to a very old version of that task, but I'll fix them.
Instead use the instructions here:
https://github.com/zulip/zulip-gci/blob/master/tasks/chat-application-comparison.md#set-a
Which have you put the spreadsheet in a publicly-accessible Google Doc and link it from the comments on your GCI task. Also double-check that all the things it's asking you to look for are the same---they should mostly be, but I might have made a couple changes.
@Kevin Riggle perfect timing. I just finished brushing and getting ready for bed.
I've commented the spreadsheet already on GCI. Hope it gets approved soon :D
@Joshua Pan Oh no! Well, go to bed, and it'll be approved in the morning. :-D
@Kevin Riggle btw, you should change the links in the GCI descriptions. The individual components in task B are quite different.
Working on it :)
Sorry for the confusion folks!
@Tim Abbott can you look over my submission for the spreadsheet?
Any mentors can help me out here?
I just need a simple approve, since the only comment was to make sure the links on my spreadsheet were clickable.
Can you please post a link?
@Reyha Verma of my spreadsheet or tasks on GCI?
GCI task: https://codein.withgoogle.com/dashboard/task-instances/4906420384301056/
Thanks for the link. I am looking at your spreadsheet right now. I am not able to see your screenshots. The links are not working for me.
@Reyha Verma That's weird... I'll look into it.
@Reyha Verma my bad... I put them in folders, so they got lost...
Yeah, no problem :)
Go ahead and modify your links. Let us know once you are done.
@Reyha Verma I have fixed all the links.
Another application I just thought of is Gitter. I'm not sure if it's similar enough to compare to Zulip, but here's a screenshot.Screenshot_34.png
@Joy Chen It looks really similar wow.
Yeah, the links work now :) Good job. I think you can clear up the screenshot section a bit by queuing the links properly like - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16a46fPeEd-PnqS5ZBpspTScnjIaXwr60xFVEdcwKiTY/edit#gid=0 , just so that it looks a bit clean.
@Reyha Verma I tried that, but the links are clickable, which was what Fahri said to do in the comments.
I initially had that... but the links weren't clickable.
Google Spreadsheets doesn't allow me to make multiple links in the same cell...
I see. I had a look at the comments. Your work looks good.
Thanks!
Is it almost ready to be approved?
Approved :)
Thanks!!!!!
You're welcome!
Can a mentor please approve my task? https://codein.withgoogle.com/dashboard/task-instances/5152429937000448/
@Umair Khan @Tomasz Kolek Are you guys busy? If so, no worries, didn't mean to bother you.
I'm not on the shift right now and don't fully able to do it. But no worries - you are in the queue and be sure your task will be reviewed as soon as possible.
Thanks.
I'll probably look for it tomorrow morning anyways.
Just wanted to see if I could claim the mypy task ASAP because it probably is going to be taken by then.
@Alicja Raszkowska There are no newsfeed or off-the-record chat on Slack; I checked their documentation pretty thoroughly already.
I'm not doubting you did, it's just that I'd expect a comment on that
@Alicja Raszkowska Did you want me to put that "there is no newsfeed and no off-the-record chat" on the spreadsheet?
Can a mentor look over my spreadsheet?
I wanted you to make sure there is no explicit info on that and if there isn't - comment in the file that there's none and the feature is not available
@Alicja Raszkowska Did that! :)
because otherwise those two questions had no additional comment and it was hard to say if you've checked
cool :)
You can double check on the GCI portal.
I'm not on shift at the moment, but another mentor will check your submission soon
Ok. thanks.
Just released around 50 additional user guide tasks!
Also released 2 small mypy annotations tasks.
Yay! The 50 user guides tasks, if completed, would basically fully document the features of Zulip, which would be an amazing goal to accomplish by the end of GCI :)
yay
I just uploaded another ~15 GitHub bite-size issue tasks.
Just uploaded another 30 user guide tasks!
(ah oops, miscommunication between the mentors, re: the earlier parts of this thread. But it is true that if these 80 (50 from last week and 30 from now) are completed we will have almost fully documented the user facing features of zulip :))
New translation tasks posted for Simplified Chinese, German, Russian, Italian, French, Turkish, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, Malayalam, Serbian, Hungarian, and Korean; thanks @Alicja Raszkowska!
If you have native fluency in a language not listed and want to help with translations, let us know!
there is also a task for proposing a language ;)
I could help with Dutch translations
Posted 15 more mypy tasks! (the "add annotations to a file" kind)
Hi students! Just to make sure, no one is doing the mypy task: svn/post_commit
right?
Added 5 more github issues tasks!
@Rishi Gupta the first task has already been closed: https://codein.withgoogle.com/tasks/5213747381534720/?sp-organization=4718815233441792&sp-is_beginner=False&sp-categories=1
