Hey guys! I thought I'd start this topic so that we can get to know everyone involved in CodeIn. I guess I'll start out: my name is Zach Breit, and I'm a high schooler from NJ. I program for my robotics team and for fun. Oh yeah – I'm also really excited for CodeIn
Hello @Zach Breit Welcome to the project.
Cool, welcome!
Hi, my name is Steve, and I'm one of the mentors. I grew up in Maryland and currently live in California.
Hello everyone! I'm Kevin from Costa Rica, I'm excited too for Code In, as @Zach Breit I was waiting for it all the year! Talking about me, I like programming a lot, I do it in my free times and for the robotics team of my school too. I think I'm going to focus a lot on Zulip's tasks, so, I'm looking forward to know everyone! Glad to meet you!
Welcome @Kevin Zeledon, great to meet you!
Hey @Kevin Zeledon. Is your robotics team associated with FIRST?
What's up:D
@Zach Breit Nope, we do LEGO Mindstorms robotics
Hey guys I'm Heidi & I'm from California!
Hi, Heidi!
Welcome @Heidi Dong! I'm from California too :)
Hi @Heidi Dong!! I wish I was from CA :( too cold in IL
Hi everyone :) I'm Robert Hönig from Germany, just as excited as everybody else! I'm involved in some national programming contests, but nothing comparable to this.
Cool @Robert Hönig, welcome! I was actually involved in the USACO back when I was a student :)
@Tim Abbott were you? wow, that is so cool! I am involved in the German national team for the IOI and we use to practice with USACO :D
Yep, I got a silver medal at the IOI back in 2003 :)
that's impressive! may I ask what you do for a living now? :)
Working on Zulip! :)
I (as well as several other folks involved in the project) am working on a startup to provide Zulip hosting and commercial support, so that folks don't need to be a Linux expert to use Zulip :), and also to generate income we can use to fund a core Zulip development team. This is actually my 3rd startup; the previous ones were acquired by Oracle and Dropbox, respectively. The goal is to make it the case that there can be a significant team working on the Zulip open source project for a living :)
Howdy folks. My name's Kevin, I'm another mentor. We used Zulip at a previous job of mine, and I'm a friend of Tim's from school, so I'm helping out. :)
(I'm from Boston.)
Cool! Are you interested in helping with a few tasks tonight?
I can!
(Still catching up on the day's traffic.)
So one of the challenges is that the GCI app is incredibly slow, and some of us don't seem to be able to filter tasks through the UI, but you can eventually find tasks in "Submitted" state.
We can help you out with that more on #GCI mentors
-> there
Hi, I'm Alex, I'm from Australia, and I'm here to do stuff I guess
welcome @Alex Huang :)
I'm from Australia too @Alex Huang , how ya going?
Hi, I'm Alex too but I discovered the change name function.
We're in for 40 days of people named '-- DROP TABLE users;' and '' bopping around, aren't we.
:D
omg yes
We're in for 40 days of people named '-- DROP TABLE users;' and '' bopping around, aren't we.
^ this one needs to be added to the topic or pinned
^
49 days actually! I did the math!
Hello! I'm a person from London who will probably help in some way, not exactly sure how yet
:D
Welcome!
Hi I'm Roy and I currently live in London. I am 16 years old and love coding and problem solving.
im pizza
im still pizza
@AlexHuang very creative!
It's kinda cool that having pizza in your name works in Zulip :)
It's RIDICULOUSLY cool.
This is the best chat client.
i might just spend this entire code-in trying out what names work in this amazing client
try weird characters
ÀÂÙĄʦʢʖɰ
woops
testing
oh man, this actually works
you can use symbols in your name and it shows up as
stuff` though
so you probably need to sanitize that
in faaact,. that could be a codein task
hi i'd just like to announce that I'M CODER
Hi alex
Hey Alex! :D
Hi everyone, It's been a while since I joined the chat but haven't had time to introduce myself :) I´m Juan from Venezuela, this is my second GCI. I really appreciate the open source community, I´ve been able to learn a lot working with mentors so far
Welcome, Juan!
or perhaps I should say, "welcome back!"
Hi Juan! Cool to meet someone from Venezuela. Been trying to watch an old Venezuelan telenovela to improve my Spanish lately but I only understand half of it lol
Hahaha it doesn´t surprise me Joy, in Spanish we have a lot of colloquialisms so it might be hard understanding some words.
Testing :)
Hey, I'm going to be starting on the task to create a command+f hotkey. Would control+f be fine, as it's usually the default search hotkey?
It should be control-f on Windows and Linux, and command-f on Mac.
Whoops. Moving to #GCI general
Hello everyone. My name is Shawn and I'm from India. This is my second GCI. I wasn't actually planning on participating this year since I'm the 12th grade this year and I have a lot of exams to study for. But I was just looking through the organizations list and found Zulip a pretty amazing organization. I won't be able to do a lot of tasks but I want to do the best work I can.
Welcome @Shawn Pereira !
Glad to have you with us :)
I'm Sumana Harihareswara, a contractor who works on Zulip in community management, writing, and mentorship. I was away from Zulip work for much of the past few weeks, and you might see me around as a GCI mentor. I've written and spoken a lot about how to get better at contributing to open source projects -- a blog post I wrote that you might benefit from is https://www.harihareswara.net/sumana/2016/10/12/0 .
Hello, I'm Patrick (yes my username is misleading) and I live in Australia. This is my second GCI and I have decided to participate this year because I love Open Source! Although I'm a little late, I'm looking forward to working with Zulip this year. (And if I accidentally say 'Tulip' in place of 'Zulip', you can blame my autocorrect)
@JefftheBest you probably want to use your real name because it's easier for a mentor to help you and get your tasks approved.
@JefftheBest another participant from down under :O @Bickio O'Callahan is from New Zealand
Yeah! Welcome. I think that makes 3 of us from the southern hemisphere! @Rafid Aslam is from indonesia.
Yaay!
Welcome to Zulip! @JefftheBest
Haha nice, welcome @JefftheBest !
Hi, I'm Bernice and I'm from Texas; this is my first ever GCI and I have no idea what's going on XD. I have quite a bit of interest in programming, although I'd still call myself a beginner, since most of my coding lies in websites like Codecademy, Code Avengers, etc, so I'm pretty intimidated by most of the GCI tasks that I've seen.
Welcome GCI students! Feel free to introduce yourselves here (it was a nice tradition that @Zach Breit started last year)!
Hey all ! I am Sivagiri :grinning: ! Excited to be participating in GCI . Hoping this will be a nice learning and a rewarding experience !
Welcome @Sivagiri Visakan!
Thank you @Robert Hönig
Hi! @Sivagiri Visakan
I'm Robert, and I'll be working as a GCI mentor. I'm from Germany, currently living in the Czech Republic (UTC+1). Really looking forward to this year's GCI and working with you all :)
Hi everyone! I'm Peter, currently living in Peru (UTC-5), planning to study compsci in college, and excited to be contributing to open source
Welcome Peter! Hope you enjoy GCI :).
Hello everyone! My name is Xavier, and I live in Sydney, Australia (UTC+11). I'm really excited to participate in GCI
Welcome @Xavier Cooney! Nice to have someone from Down Under :)
Hello! I'm Andrea, a mentor from California. I was a mentor last year too, this time I'll be dropping in to lend a hand along with the regularly scheduled mentors (lots of traveling happening right now.) I'm excited to see everyone's work this year!
Hello Peter, I am Abijith I am a student too! :)
Hello everybody
I'm Alexander, I'm student from Russia
Hey Alexander! I'm from India. :)
Im too russia student)
Как дела?
Fine)
I think we need to communicate in English so that other people can understand
@Kirill Kudryavtsev @Aleksandr welcome! My wife was born in Russia, so I've been slowly learning Russian :).
@Aleksandr @Kirill Kudryavtsev Hi guys! I’m a mentor, and I’m from Russia too! Welcome!
Zulip's Russian translation is about half-complete, so that could be a fun area to get involved in during GCI (I think we have a few tasks for it)
I also thought so and applied for transifex.com
Hi! I'm Joshua, a mentor from California. I was a Google Code-in Grand Winner last year (with another organization). Looking forward to help and see everyone's work!
Hi everyone! I am Yash from India currently studying in 10th standard. I have heard a lot about Zulip from by brother and would like to contribute something to it! Being in class 10, I won't be able to be super active but sure I can learn a thing or two in the free time I get!
@Yashvardhan Sharma Hi there! Welcome to Zulip!
Hi! My name is Chaitanya. I'm in grade 12 and only recently introduced to programming!
Welcome @Chaitanya Baranwal!
Hi @Chaitanya Baranwal
Hi, @Chaitanya Baranwal Welcome to Zulip!
